Founded in 1967, CTI is an Engineering Services firm specializing in customizing electro-mechanical hardware for government agencies. An employee-owned company, CTI uses a broad knowledge base to provide superior mechanical, electrical, hardware and software products as well as unparalleled engineering and technical services.
Business Situation
CTI needed to upgrade their job costing systems to facilitate rapid growth. They were using their outsourced payroll system to handle job costing, which was not automated with other facets of their financial management systems. This resulted in a time and labor intensive billing system, which saw invoices going out 60 days after work was performed in some cases.
Solution
CTI engaged Intellitec Solutions to implement Microsoft Dynamics SL. This included the core financial modules as well as several modules in the Dynamics SL Project Management suite.

Since it’s inception in 1967, CTI has grown from a single desk operation to a multi facility organization with over 47,000 square feet of fully equipped shops, laboratories, CAD rooms and office work areas. They are an engineering services firm specializing in customizing and designing electrical and mechanical hardware for government agencies.
By engaging Intellitec Solutions to implement the Dynamics SL suite of Financial and Project Management modules, CTI has been able to facilitate 400% company growth, while adding just one person to the accounting staff. Their billing cycle lag time has been cut 79% through the use of Dynamics SL’s job costing, and their cash accounts have soared as a result. Billing has become far more automated, which has allowed key accounting people to focus on mission critical tasks.
The solution has also provided Lead Engineers working on a job the ability to drill down on a task, take a closer look at what has been done, and extract the data they need quickly. This allows for better management of projects, and assists in compliance with government reporting regulations.
Prior to their implementation of Dynamics SL, CTI used their payroll system to do job costing. Job codes were entered into the payroll system, which in turn generated a report to the General Ledger. A canned GL report was then generated, and billing was then manually generated. “In a best case scenario, bills would go out the door 30 days after we closed a month,” said Controller Paul McCann. In addition to the delays, this process consumed virtually an entire month of one individual’s time.
When selecting a partner to work with for Dynamics SL, CTI wanted to make sure they found a firm that was in touch with their business needs. “We were implementing a solution that was going to grow with our needs, we needed a partner that was going to be flexible and responsive,” said Paul McCann. “Intellitec Solutions was the perfect fit. During the implementation, when we needed something from them, they were there. They accommodated our schedule, and were respectful of our time. I have had positive feedback from our staff on there knowledge and professionalism.”
The result has been a successful implementation that has worked well during CTI’s period of growth. “We could not have accomplished what we have done with our old system.”
